Quicktime Alternative

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

This is an essential replacement for quicktime, on any system. It gets rid of the sucky quicktime player and allows you to play .MOV files in media player (or media player classic, an excellent video player which it optionally installs)

It also lets you do almost all the things that the Pro version of quicktime will do, most importantly save MOV files to disk.

Enhance that video

This is one of those rare tech things thats too cool to pass up even if its not about games.

A startup called MotionDSP is offering a free online service that can enhance crappy lowres video like you wouldn’t believe. The technology is also being used by the military to enhance low res satellite video feeds.

It turns this

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rQldR1-kT34"></param><embed src=" http://www.youtube.com/v/rQldR1-kT34" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

into this

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nxsIrQ2WURk"></param><embed src=" http://www.youtube.com/v/nxsIrQ2WURk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I honestly didn’t think that was even possible. Apparently, it compares successive frames of the video to basically get the best bits of each, much as the human eye does.

They’re looking for people to upload crappy 3gp files to them to test and publish on the site.

Get to it people!

Ant Movie Catalog

www.antp.be/software/moviecatalog/

Ant Movie Catalog is a free app for tracking your movie collection. And it has everything you could ever need. Its easy to use and powerful, with multiple functions. You can run several catalogs at once. You can put just the title of a movie, or everything about it, including release date, cast, credits, cover image, format, bit rate, audio format, country, genre.. the list goes on. You can auto-lookup this information through a variety of movie sites, including IMDB. A few button clicks will populate as many of the fields as you like.

You can import/export the catalogs to/from a pile of different formats. You can even assign ‘Borrowers’ to a your DVDs, to keep track of who you loaned what to. Its all you could ever need.

The only hang up I have about it is that the movie info can’t be done in batches. Each movie has to be done individually. Maybe they’ll fix that in the next version!

VirtualDub

virtualdub.sourceforge.net

VirtualDub is a video editing tool that succeeds where most others fail. It can perform a myriad of brain meltingly complex tasks, but most noteably it can cut, join, and recompress AVI video files using VFW codecs. If you don’t understand what this does, you probably don’t need it. And if you do, you probably have it already. But nevertheless, it is free, it is essential, and it deserves a mention in a blog about freeware. PS: It also comes included in GordianKnot
